The 'New Normal'

School in Honduras is back in session... sort of.

Like many places around the world, schools in Honduras are adjusting to the 'new normal' trying to slow the spread of Corona Virus. COVID-19 cases have recently spiked in Olancho where our partner school, Escuela Lic Ramon Sarmiento, is located. Since the beginning of the year (February) our partner school has attempted a remote learning model. However the challenges are almost insurmountable, with limited resources, no internet or access to electricity, the teachers are unable to regularly connect with their students.

What does that mean for us?

Food Program:

Early on in the pandemic we decided that we would continue our food program even when schools were closed. Food insecurity is already a concern in rural Honduras and COVID-19 has only made that problem worse. We are continuing to focus on our food distribution and we have taken a few more steps to ensure that we are delivering food in the safest way possible. We now deliver our lunch at four separate locations so that we can have smaller groups of students at each location, assuring that proper social distancing is maintained. We also supply PPE to each student and their parents when they arrive.

Activities:

Our next step is to work with the teachers and create take home projects and activities for the students. As always, our goal is to make sure that students are thriving in the classroom. Now, with the implementation of remote learning, that goal is even more challenging. We are dedicated to working with the teachers to monitor the students' performance from home and are working to find new and exciting ways to help motivate and engage our students with activities for the home.

How You Can Help?

We are always looking for volunteers who want to help us make the biggest impact that we can. If you're interested and would like to share your talents, abilities or general enthusiasm please email info@guidedopportunities.org for more information.
