Whether you're following a rabbit to Wonderland, or the Hobbit to the Lonely Mountain, one thing is for sure: a good story sticks with you. Storytelling is one of the most important human traditions. I once heard it said, "Stories teach us to love, to forgive others, to be just and to strive for better than we have.". It was with this same passion that we invited the kids to tell their own stories.
"Stories teach us to love, to forgive others, to be just and to strive for better than we have."
Our two week storytelling unit was a hit! We read stories aloud, drew them on paper, even exercised our creative improv skills and made them up on the spot. The kids learned story structure, character creation, and creative thinking.
"It's safe to say this unit had a storybook ending."
At the end of the two weeks the kids got to write their own stories and turn them into books that they could take home. In my opinion no one has said it better than Kate DiCamillo,
“Stories are light. Light is precious in a world so dark. Begin at the beginning. Tell Gregory a story. Make some light.”
― Kate DiCamillo, The Tale of Despereaux
